Sirhan Sirhan, who has served more than 50 years in jail for the assassination of former Sen. Robert F. Kennedy (D-N.Y.), was reportedly stabbed on Friday by a fellow prison inmate in San Diego.

Sirhan, 75, was hospitalized Friday after the incident and is in stable condition, The Associated Press reported.

The stabbing took place Friday afternoon in one of the prison yards at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility near San Diego. TMZ first reported the stabbing.

“Officers responded quickly, and found an inmate with stab wound injuries. He was transported to an outside hospital for medical care, and is currently in stable condition,” the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said in a statement.{mosads}

The suspect in the stabbing has reportedly been identified and placed in isolation, according to TMZ. An investigation is underway to determine if charges will be filed.

Sirhan was convicted of shooting Kennedy shortly after the late New York senator declared victory in the California Democratic presidential primary in 1968.

After delivering his victory speech to supporters from the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, Kennedy left the podium and exited through a kitchen hallway, where he shook hands with a busboy who had delivered food to his room a day earlier and was shot in the head. He was taken to the hospital and died the next day.

Sirhan was convicted in 1969 and was sentenced to death, but his sentence was commuted to life in prison in 1972.

The AP reported that Sirhan has claimed to have no recollection of the shooting or his initial confession.
