McCain’s family, McCain Institute to promote #ActsOfCivility in marking first anniversary of senator’s death

The McCain Institute and Sen. John McCain’s family are marking the first anniversary of the Arizona Republican’s death by promoting, encouraging and undertaking acts of civility and posting their plans on social media using the hashtag “ActsOfCivility.”

McCain died on Aug. 25 last year at the age of 81 after decades in the Senate. He was the GOP presidential nominee in 2008 and survived years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam before beginning a storied political career.

{mosads}Organizers will encourage actions including working with peers or colleagues with different views and having open-minded discussions with family members you disagree with, Axios reports.

Luke Knittig, a spokesman for the McCain Institute, said staffers there were committing to read news from different sources to try to get a sense of how others think.

“My family and I are going out of our way to properly meet our (not so) new neighbors, who on the face of it we have little in common with,” Knittng told The Hill in an email. “Many other staffers have committed to reading news and commentary from sources they normally try to ignore.”
