Madigan nixes Senate bid

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan will not run for the Senate next year, Chris Cillizza of the Washington Post reports.

Madigan has been considered a leading Democratic possibility for the race and was courted by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and the White House.

Madigan was running for both the Senate and for governor and was considered a favorite in both races. According to Cillizza’s report, though, she won’t run for either post and will run for re-election instead.

With Madigan out, the Democratic field is left to state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias. Businessman Chris Kennedy is another Democrat rumored to be eyeing the race.

Rep. Mark Kirk (Ill.) is the leading Republican considering a run, and, with Madigan out, may be more likely to jump in.
