North Carolina governor candidate said he would appreciate Biden campaigning for him

North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein (D) said Sunday he would welcome President Biden campaigning for him in the swing state.

CNN co-host Jake Tapper asked Stein on “State of the Union” if he would want Biden to campaign for him in North Carolina — a swing state Democrats are hoping to flip in 2024 after narrowly losing it in 2020.

“Yes, because I think he can win North Carolina. He is our best chance to move this country forward. But again, I’m running to be governor. I have a strong argument for the voters of North Carolina. I have been fighting for them as their attorney general,” Stein told Tapper.

Stein won the Democratic nomination for the North Carolina governor’s race on Super Tuesday last week. He has been the state attorney general since 2017 after previously serving in the state Senate. He also has the endorsement of outgoing Gov. Roy Cooper (D).

According to The Hill/Decision Desk HQ polling average, former President Trump is leading Biden in North Carolina by about 10 percentage points.

Stein then touted the accomplishments he’s had as state attorney general.

“We eliminated what was the largest backlog of untested rape kits in the entire nation. We’ve protected kids from child sex abuse. We’ve defended people’s fundamental freedoms, whether that’s the right to vote, or women’s reproductive freedoms,” he said. “These are things that I’ve done as AG, and it’s that fighting spirit I want to take the governor’s office to make sure that our schools are strong and that our communities are safe.”
