Vitter predicts trouble for Sotomayor

Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) suggested that Sonia Sotomayor will face tougher questions during her confirmation hearings next month. Vitter said that the Supreme Court’s reversal the Sotomayor-backed decision in Ricci v. DeStefano “heightens worries” about the nominee.

He tweeted:

Vitter linked to his official statement on today’s decision, which says:

Judge Sotomayor’s decision, which was reversed by the Supreme Court today, seems to suggest that racial discrimination can only happen in one direction. That’s deeply troubling. It certainly suggests a broader philosophy – a belief in group rights over the individual. It goes along with her numerous comments that a wise-Latina judge would reach a better decision.

The Supreme Court ruled that the city government New Haven, CT wrongly denied white firefighters promotions because they deemed a mandatory examination they passed to be racially biased. Earlier today, CBS News legal correspondent Andrew Cohen tweeted that Sotomayor may not face great difficulty in seeking confirmation despite the ruling.
