Trump wins Tennessee GOP primary

Former President Trump was projected to win the GOP primary in Tennessee, according to Decision Desk HQ.

It’s another win for Trump in a state with 58 delegates up for grabs on the Republican side as he tries to notch the 1,215 he needs to win the party nod.

Trump won out over rival Nikki Haley, who has failed to rack up any significant wins even as she vows to stay in the race as the last challenger between the former president and the nomination.

Trump headed into the Tennessee Super Tuesday primary with a staggering lead of nearly 60 points above Haley, according to averages from Decision Desk HQ/The Hill. The pair appeared on the Volunteer State ballot alongside several candidates who have since dropped out, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R).

Trump won Tennessee in both 2016 and 2020, and the state hasn’t voted for a Democratic presidential candidate in decades.

Tennessee is one of more than a dozen states that are holding presidential nominating events on Super Tuesday, along with Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia and the U.S. territory of American Samoa.

The contests are expected to significantly boost both Trump and President Biden, the Democratic front-runner, in their efforts to win the delegates they need.
