1 dead, multiple injuries in shooting after Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade

At least one person was killed and more than 20 were injured after a shooting broke out at the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory parade Wednesday, officials said.

The shooting occurred on the west side of Union Station in downtown Kansas City, Mo., just after the parade ended and as fans were leaving. Police said three people are in custody in connection with the shooting.

At least 21 people were shot and injured, including at least eight children, according to Kansas City police. Eight of the victims were described with immediately life-threatening injuries.

Local radio station KKFI confirmed one of its DJs, Lisa Lopez-Galvan, was killed in the shooting. Authorities have not confirmed the names of any victims.

“Today was tragic for everyone who was part of it,” Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said at the press conference. “I had the chance to talk to my wife just a moment ago, said we became part of a statistic of too many Americans. Those who have experienced, or been part of, or connected to a mass shooting.” 

“That is something that I hope we all recognize is highly problematic of all of us,” he continued. “I continue to commend our police officers, our firefighters and others that were there to respond instantly. But we also need to figure out a way to make sure that things like this stop happening in our country.”

Lucas noted that more than 800 uniformed law enforcement were present at the parade.

“That’s what happens with guns,” he said. “We had security in any number of places, eyes on top of buildings and beyond. And there still is a risk to people.”

Lucas said he had been in contact with the White House to coordinate with federal law enforcement.

Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly (D) and Missouri Gov. Mike Parson (R) were in attendance at the parade and confirmed that they and their families were unharmed. 

“State law enforcement personnel are assisting local authorities in response efforts,” Parson posted on X. “As we wait to learn more, our hearts go out to the victims.”

The Kansas City Chiefs said the organization was “saddened” by the “senseless act of violence.”

There have been 48 mass shootings so far in 2024, according to the nonprofit Gun Violence Archive.
