Poll: Support for impeaching Trump rises to 41 percent

About 4 in 10 Americans now say that President Trump should be impeached and removed from office, according to a CNN poll conducted by SSRS

The survey, which was released early Sunday, found that 41 percent of Americans said the president should be impeached based on what they have read or heard. The figure represents a 4 percentage point increase from a CNN poll released last month.

{mosads}A majority of Americans, 54 percent, said they do not feel Trump should be impeached.

The increased percentage favoring impeachment largely stems from growing Democratic support for it. Seventy-six percent of Democratic respondents said they support impeaching Trump, an 8 percentage point increase from April.

CNN noted that Trump’s approval rating has remained steady in the last month. Forty-three percent of respondents said they approve of Trump’s job performance, while 52 percent said they disapprove of it.

The public’s split on impeachment comes as an increasing number of Democratic lawmakers call for Congress to launch an impeachment inquiry of Trump. Several Democrats called for an inquiry after special counsel Robert Mueller made his first public comments about his investigation last week.

Mueller’s investigation did not find sufficient evidence to conclude a conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Moscow took place. The report said Mueller was unable to make a conclusive determination on whether Trump obstructed justice.

Top Democratic lawmakers have called for continuing to investigate Trump.

Forty percent of Americans in the new poll said Democrats are overreaching in their probes. Fifty-three percent of respondents said Trump is not doing enough to cooperate with the investigations.

The CNN poll was conducted between May 28 and May 31 among a national population of 1,006 adults. The margin of error is 3.8 percentage points.
