Trump may attend sumo match during visit to Japan

President Trump says he may attend a sumo wrestling match next month when he travels to Japan.

Trump told reporters about his plans during a Friday Oval Office meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

{mosads}The president is scheduled to travel to Tokyo next month when he will be the first foreign leader to meet Japan’s new emperor. Crown Prince Naruhito will succeed his father, Akihito, who is abdicating on Wednesday.

Trump said he was not sure if he would make the installation of a new emperor but decided to attend the “big event” when Abe told him it was 100 times bigger than the Super Bowl.

The president is expected to return to Japan in June to attend the Group of 20 summit of world leaders.

Abe is in Washington to hold talks with Trump over North Korea’s nuclear program, trade and other issues. Trump and Abe are expected to play golf at the president’s private club in Northern Virginia on Saturday after the Japanese leader and his wife attend a White House birthday dinner on Friday night for first lady Melania Trump.
