Poll: Nearly half of Republicans say no one on Trump campaign committed a crime

Nearly half of Republican voters in a new poll said it’s accurate to say no one associated with President Trump’s 2016 campaign committed a crime.

Forty-seven percent of GOP respondents in the HuffPost/YouGov survey released Monday said nobody on the Trump campaign committed any crimes.

{mosads}The poll was conducted immediately after the Justice Department released special counsel Robert Mueller’s report Thursday.

While almost 50 percent of Republicans said it was closest to the truth to say nobody on Trump’s campaign committed a crime, just 4 percent of Democrats said the same.

Respondents were given a list of statements and told to choose which one they believed was closest to the truth. The other options were “President Trump committed crimes,” “President Trump did not commit any crimes, but others on his campaign did” and “not sure.”

Thirty-five percent of respondents overall said Trump committed crimes, while 21 percent said Trump did not any commit crimes but others on his campaign did.

Twenty-five percent of voters said they were not sure.

Mueller’s 22-month investigation did not uncover evidence that Trump’s campaign colluded with Moscow to influence the 2016 election, but the probe resulted in guilty pleas from Trump associates such as former campaign adviser George Papadopoulos, former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, former campaign aide Richard Gates and former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

The report says Mueller was unable to “conclusively determine” that no criminal conduct occurred with regard to obstruction of justice by Trump.

“While this report does not conclude that the President committed a crime, it also does not exonerate him,” the report states.

The HuffPost/YouGov poll was conducted April 18 and April 19 among 1,000 registered voters and has a margin of error of 3.3 percentage points.
