Kansas woman buys out Payless store to help Nebraska flood victims
A Kansas woman bought more than 200 shoes at a local Payless store as part of an effort to donate the pairs to Nebraska flood victims.
Addy Tritt, 25, told Hutch Post that she approached a store in Hays, Kan., about buying out its shoe selection after the prices were lowered to $1 per pair. Payless said in February that it was closing all of its stores, and liquidating its assets across the U.S.
Tritt reached an agreement with the store to buy the remaining 204 pairs of shoes for $100, including 162 pairs of baby shoes, two pairs of men’s shoes and 40 pairs of women’s shoes. The retail price of the merchandise exceeded $6,000, according to the outlet.{mosads}
“I have been so blessed,” she told Hutch Post. “There have been so many great people in my life who have inspired me. I see so many horrible things in the news. So many people have helped me when I was down, I want to help if I can.”
Tritt told CNN that she gave a woman nearly half the shoes after she responded to Tritt’s request about transporting them. Tritt gave the remaining 113 pairs to a drive organized by the Sigma Alpha agricultural sorority at Fort Hays State University.
The sorority said the shoes were delivered on Monday in a tractor trailer that included water and supplies donated by other individuals, CNN reported.
Nebraska was one of multiple states hit by severe flooding last month. The events led President Trump to approve a disaster declaration to address the problems.
A congressional delegation said in March that Nebraska would likely face $400 million in losses from damage to livestock and fields as a result of the flooding.
