Sandra O’Connor to lie in repose at Supreme Court on Dec. 18

The late Justice Sandra Day O’Connor will lie in repose at the Supreme Court on Dec. 18, the court announced Tuesday.

As is tradition, O’Connor’s body will be brought to the Great Hall — located outside the main entrance to the courtroom — where the public can pay respects from 10:30 a.m. until 8 p.m.

The court said it will hold a private ceremony earlier that morning.

O’Connor’s funeral will be held the following day, Dec. 19, at the Washington National Cathedral. The cathedral said the service will be held at 11 a.m.

The first woman to serve on the Supreme Court, O’Connor died on Friday at the age of 93 following a battle with advanced dementia.

Nominated by then-President Reagan in 1981, she sat on the Supreme Court for more than two decades, becoming the indisputable swing vote for many years on some of the court’s most contentious issues.

Her colleagues lauded O’Connor as a trailblazer and an American hero, with many noting their warm friendships with the late justice and praising her civics education work after retiring from the bench.

In lieu of flowers, O’Connor’s family requested donations be made to iCivics, the civics education organization she founded and led.
