Warren set to announce plan for universal child care: reports

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (Mass.), one of the Democrats seeking to challenge President Trump for the White House next year, reportedly plans to unveil a plan that would provide universal care for children in the United States.

The plan, first reported by The Boston Globe and HuffPost, is set to be unveiled Tuesday.

{mosads}It would make access to quality child care universal through federal funds offered to care providers based on the income of the child’s family.

HuffPost reports that Warren’s plan calls for no family having to spend more than 7 percent of its total household income on child care.

Additionally, families that earn less than twice the poverty line would pay nothing for child care.

The poverty line is roughly $50,000 a year for a family of four.

Warren is seen as one of the top contenders for the Democratic bid to challenge Trump in 2020.

The Hill has reached out to Warren’s campaign for comment on the child care plan.

Sources told HuffPost that the initiative calls for about $700 billion in new federal spending on child care over the next 10 years.

In recent weeks, Warren has announced several major programs aimed at curbing income inequality, including a potential wealth tax proposal aimed at the ultra-rich.

Warren reportedly plans to use money garnered by the wealth tax to help fund her child care plan.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.), another 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, has made affordable child care a top issue for her campaign as well.
