Mace on Gaetz’s push to oust McCarthy: He should ‘put his money where his mouth is’

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) called on Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) Sunday to follow through on his vow to introduce a motion to remove Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).

“It hasn’t happened yet, and I am not going to comment on conjecture here. Either he is going to file it or he’s not. If he’s going to do it, put his money where his mouth is,” Mace told ABC’s Jonathan Karl on “This Week.”

Tensions between Gaetz and McCarthy have been increasing after the Florida Republican warned last week that he would force a vote on ousting McCarthy if he did not meet a series of demands on spending and legislation. Gaetz has maintained that he will follow through on his warnings, but other members have grown skeptical over whether he is serious about opening a motion to remove McCarthy.

“If you want to file a motion to vacate, then file the f‑‑‑ing motion,” McCarthy said during a closed-door GOP conference meeting Thursday, according to Rep. Brian Mast (R-Fla.).

Mace also would not rule out backing a motion to remove McCarthy, she told Karl. She suggested that some of the promises made to her have not been kept, noting that “everything is on the table.”

“We’ll see how it turns out, but I will tell you, I’m one of those members who were made certain promises,” Mace said. “I’ve worked on women’s issues. I’ve worked on issues you know, related to gun violence, that I feel are very important. And you know, it’s fallen on deaf ears. And if I if I give a handshake to someone, I expect them to follow through.”
