Murphy on 2020 bid: ‘We need a candidate who is 100 percent authentic’

Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) on Sunday left open the possibility of running for president in 2020.

I just got reelected and I don’t think that, frankly, I need to run for president to make a difference for my state or the country,” Murphy told ABC’s “This Week,” when asked if he was considering a White House bid.

{mosads}”But I’ll say this, I think in 2020 we need a candidate who is 100 percent authentic, who is tough, and who can challenge this president on both domestic policy and foreign policy and I’m simply going to make sure that we have a candidate that fits that bill.”

Murphy, a key member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, previously said he wouldn’t consider a 2020 bid until after the midterms.

When asked on Sunday about the candidates who have voiced an interest in running in 2020, Murphy said that a big field is “great.”

“I frankly think that in that context, the best candidate will emerge,” he said. “And I have a feeling that the Democrat electorate are gonna have one thing in mind when they go to the polls next year: who can beat Donald Trump.”
