The executive director of the Log Cabin Republicans said on Friday that there have been ups and downs as to how the Trump administration has dealt with policies impacting the LGBT community.
“I think there’s a lot of ups and downs in the last two years with some of the administration’s actions,” Jerri Ann Henry told Hill.TV’s Krystal Ball and Saagar Enjeti on “Rising.”
“He has been more vocally supportive than any Republican candidate or president, but there have been a few things that I haven’t loved that the administration has done, and some things that I think we can do some work on,” she continued.
“I want to make sure that we have the opportunity to improve on those things, not just fight over them,” she said.
“Some of the issues where we can make major improvements are just the nuances. You know, marriage has only been legal for a short time, and we’ve seen a few hiccups here and there how that’s been rolled out with the military, with the State Department, visas, and how they handle married LGBT partners and non-married LGBT partners for diplomats. That’s something we need a lot of work on.”
President Trump appeared to be vocally supportive of the LGBT community during the 2016 presidential campaign, tweeting in June of 2016 that he would fight for the community.

However, critics and numerous members of the LGBT community have said Trump’s policies have negatively impacted the community.
The administration has moved to ban transgender individuals from the military and has rolled back Obama-era protections for transgender students.
Reports surfaced in October that the administration had started denying visas to some unmarried, same-sex partners of foreign diplomats and employees of the United Nations (U.N.).
