Democrat Susan Wild defeated Republican Marty Nothstein in Pennsylvania’s newly-drawn 7th district Tuesday in a good sign for Democrats hoping to ride “the Year of the Woman” to a blue wave.
Her victory will mark a notable change for the Pennsylvania congressional delegation, which was made up entirely of men. The race had been rated “Lean Democratic” by Cook Political Report.
Much of the district had been represented by moderate Republican Charlie Dent, who retired this year.
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court redrew the state’s congressional districts after ruling they that had been gerrymandered in a partisan way.
Wild, who went into election night with a 7-point lead in an average of recent polls, was Allentown’s first female Solicitor, and ran on a platform of women’s rights, health care for all, and labor issues.
Nothstein, currently the Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of Lehigh County, was a professional cyclist and an Olympic medalist before entering politics.
Libertarian Tim Silfies, a local reporter, was also on the ballot, but his share of the vote remained in the single digits.
