Democrat Chrissy Houlahan elected to House in Pennsylvania

Democrat Chrissy Houlahan was elected to the House on Tuesday after defeating Republican Greg McCauley in Pennsylvania’s 6th Congressional District, flipping a seat currently held by the GOP. 

The race was an open election after current Rep. Ryan Costello (R) announced earlier this year that he would not seek reelection.

{mosads}Houlahan, a first-time candidate, had 59 percent of the vote with 153 of 329 precincts reporting when the race was called. 

She is among several women headed to Congress from Pennsylvania, which currently has zero women in the House. Madeleine Dean, Mary Gay Scanlon and Susan Wild were also among the female House candidates projected to be elected from the state Tuesday. 

Houlahan and McCauley each ran unopposed in their respective primaries earlier this year. 

The 6th District, which was redrawn earlier this year, is in southeast Pennsylvania and includes parts of Philadelphia.

Houlahan is a military veteran and has also worked as a teacher in Philadelphia and as chief operating officer of AND1, an apparel and footwear company.
