Republican National Committee (RNC) spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany said on Thursday that she believes the GOP will likely lose House seats in November’s midterm elections.
“I do think we’ll lose seats in the House. I think we’ll end up keeping it,” McEnany told Hill.TV’s Krystal Ball and Saagar Enjeti on “Rising.”
“We’re actually a bit more confident than we were. Again, not denying history, only three times since the Civil War has the party in charge of the White House actually went on to gain seats, so we’re not denying history,” she said.
“Democrats are still spending in toss-up Republican races. They have not yet made their way into lean-Republican or likely-Republican,” she added, citing GOP Reps. Barbara Comstock (Va.), Will Hurd (Texas), and Carlos Curbelo’s (Fla.) reelection races.
McEnany’s comments come as Republicans look to defend their majorities in the House and the Senate.
Democrats only need 23 seats to win back the House in November.
Their path to taking back the Senate appears to be more daunting, because they have 26 Senate seats up for election in November, while Republicans only have nine.
