Sessions gets unexpected support – from a Democrat who wants to impeach Trump

Rep. Al Green (D-Texas) said on Thursday that Attorney General Jeff Sessions is not in his post to do President Trump’s bidding and that he should remain in his job as long as justice is being carried out.

“I think that the attorney general is not there to do the bidding of the president in any private way. He’s not there to protect the president. He is there to assure that justice is done, and as long as he’s doing that, I think he merits staying in office,” Green told Hill.TV’s Buck Sexton and Krystal Ball on “Rising.”

“I’ll leave it to the president as to whether he wants to be so bold as to fire an attorney general after having fired Mr. Comey for Mr. Comey’s investigating his campaign’s involvement with Russians and the election,” he continued, referring to former FBI director James Comey.

The Texas congressman’s comments come after Trump blasted Sessions in an interview with Hill.TV this week, saying that he did not have an attorney general.

“I don’t have an attorney general. It’s very sad,” Trump said. “I’m not happy at the border, I’m not happy with numerous things, not just this.”

Green responded to Trump’s comments in a tweet, saying Sessions “works for the people, not for you.”

Trump began to frequently attack Sessions after the attorney general recused himself from the investigation into Russian election interference. The president has blamed that decision for the appointment of special counsel Robert Mueller.

The president’s attacks on Sessions have fueled speculation that Trump will move to fire him.

Green, who has introduced articles of impeachment against Trump, said that any move from Trump to fire Sessions will be considered if impeachment is brought to the table.

“I think it’s certainly evidence that will be weighed in the balance,” he said. “The president has to realize that he is not above the law, that he is not above justice, and if we don’t send him that message, he’s not going to stop. He’s not going to decide that he’s done enough. He has already demonstrated.”
