Scalise warns against violent rhetoric on Twitter: ‘I’m all too familiar’ with the consequences

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) chided Twitter on Tuesday while speaking out against “violent leftist rhetoric” online, writing that he was “all too familiar” with the consequences.

Scalise weighed in after the right-leaning news site The Daily Caller reported that the husband of National Rifle Association (NRA) spokeswoman Dana Loesch had reported a violent threat made against Loesch and her family on Twitter.

{mosads}”There’s a massive problem with violent leftist rhetoric online that targets conservatives and their families; I’m all too familiar with its dangerous consequences,” Scalise tweeted.

“It shouldn’t take an entire day of public backlash to force Twitter into banning these threats,” he added.

The Louisiana Republican’s message comes after a Twitter user wrote in a reply to Loesch over the weekend that she “has to have her children murdered before she’ll understand” the need for gun control.

In an email to Loesch’s husband, Chris Loesch, who reported the threat, Twitter reportedly said the tweet had violated site rules after initially reviewing the message and finding it not to be a violation.

“We have re-reviewed the account you reported and have locked it because we found it to be in violation of the Twitter Rules,” Twitter said in the email, according to The Daily Caller.

Dana Loesch told the website that she “wish[ed] Twitter just treated all users consistently.”

Scalise returned to the Capitol last fall after being seriously wounded in a shooting at a Republican baseball practice earlier in the year.

The gunman, who died in a shootout with police, had previously served as a volunteer for the presidential campaign of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and was a frequent critic of Republicans.
