Samuel Adams brewery neighbor posts sign criticizing founder for praise of Trump

A Boston-area man living near the Samuel Adams brewery has posted a sign calling out the company’s co-founder for his praise of President Trump.

Jeremy Phillips told The Boston Globe that he and his 15-year-old son, Julian Kennedy, are upset with Boston Beer Co., which brews Samuel Adams, and founder Jim Koch for Koch’s attendance at a dinner with Trump.

“Shame! Sam Adams [loves] Trump,” the sign reads. “Shame!”

{mosads}The large sign, hung on the side of Phillips’s house in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood, is clearly visible from the brewery’s parking lot, according to the Globe.

Phillips and Kennedy posted the sign after it was reported that Koch thanked Trump for a corporate tax cut at a dinner with other CEOs at Trump’s New Jersey golf course earlier this month.

The comment sparked backlash from Somerville, Mass., Mayor Joseph Curtatone (D), who vowed on Twitter to “never drink Sam Adam’s beer again!”

Phillips made a similar vow in his comments to the Globe.

Phillips told the Globe that he is “outraged” by Trump’s immigration policies and is offended by Koch’s comments. He charged that Trump’s policies could harm their diverse neighborhood.

“He’s not thinking of Jamaica Plain when he goes to that meeting,” Phillips said. “He needs to wake up a little bit.”

Phillips told the Globe that Boston Beer Co. manager Jennifer Glanville called him to say that Koch went to the meeting to support craft brewers. He said that he responded by telling Glanville that Koch needs to apologize for his support of the tax cuts and “explain that he supports immigrant families, muslims, African-Americans, [LGBT] communities, students, the environment, and women.”

Phillips said he’d like to see Koch donate some of the money he’s saved due to the tax cuts to groups he said have been hurt by Trump’s policies.
