Russia open to talks with US on strategic weapons

Russia on Tuesday said that the country is willing to discuss its strategic weapons with the U.S. after Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly pushed President Trump for talks on arms control.

Reuters reported that Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said the county is open to discussing its new weapons, despite the weapons not falling under the Soviet-era Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty.

Russia began testing new nuclear weapons and missiles just days after Putin’s summit with Trump in Helsinki last month.

Putin reportedly brought up nuclear arms and weapons limits during the meeting.

It remains unclear exactly what the two leaders discussed during a private one-on-one meeting in Helsinki. The Russian foreign ministry said that it was prepared to implement the agreements reached during the meeting in the days following the summit.

White House officials have remained vague about what Trump and Putin discussed. National Security Council spokesman Garrett Marquis told Politico last month that Trump and Putin did not exchange written proposals during the meeting.
