Lanny Davis, the new attorney for President Trump’s former “fixer” Michael Cohen, is speaking out about his client’s efforts to deal with special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia interference investigation. According to Davis, Cohen wants to declare himself “independent” from Trump and to no longer “be a punching bag” for the president.
In an interview with “Rising,” Hill.TV’s morning news show, Davis referred to an earlier interview that Cohen gave with ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos in which the former Trump adviser said he would be more loyal to his family than to the president.
“There’s a reason that he said at the very end of the interview with Mr. Stephanopoulos that he took these contrary positions to Mr. Trump, who he previously said he would take a bullet for, a comment that I believe he would not say today,” Davis told co-hosts Krystal Ball and Buck Sexton.
“The reason he said is, ‘I will not be a punching bag as part of somebody else’s defense strategy,'” Davis added. “This was a declaration of independence two days before July 4.”
