92-year-old man attacked with brick, told to ‘go back to your country:’ reports
Los Angeles police say a 92-year-old man was beaten with a brick during his regular walk around his neighborhood on Independence Day.
Rodolfo Rodriguez was reportedly doing his routine walk when he accidentally bumped into a young girl on the sidewalk, The Sacramento Bee reported.
{mosads}That’s when Rodriguez was reportedly attacked by the toddler’s mother on the sidewalk. She proceeded to push him to the ground and repeatedly hit his face with a brick, police said.
“Go back to your country, why are you here, bad things,” a resident who witnessed the incident told a local CBS affiliate.
In footage obtained by one of the witnesses, four other men can reportedly be seen joining the mother on the attack, kicking the elderly man.
Rodriguez is a legal U.S. citizen. Erik Mendoza, his grandson, told the local station his grandfather doesn’t speak English and doesn’t understand why he was attacked.
Rodriguez reportedly has a broken cheek bone, broken ribs and has suffered bruises all over his body.
“Who would do this to anybody?” Mendoza told the outlet. “A 92-year-old senior citizen, what can he do to anybody? There’s no harm that he meant.”
Local police are currently looking into the incident and are searching for the five people who attacked the elderly man.
“We are concerned, especially with the type of crime they committed,” Deputy D’Angelo Robinson told the Sacramento Bee. “There was what appears to be a 4-year-old child there who witnessed the entire thing. We can’t have these kind of people like that out in the streets.”
A GoFundMe account set up of for Rodriguez raised more than $30,000 of its $15,000 goal to help the grandfather cover medical costs.
