Trump says one-on-one Kim meeting was ‘very, very good’

President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have finished their one-on-one meeting and started talks with their advisers, with Trump saying the summit is “very, very good” so far.

“Very, very good,” Trump told reporters in response to a shouted question about how the talks were going while walking with Kim from one meeting to the next. “Excellent relationship.”

Trump and Kim met alone with only their translators for about 45 minutes to start the first-ever summit between a sitting U.S. president and a North Korean leader. The meeting is taking place Tuesday in Singapore at the Capella resort on the city-state’s Sentosa Island.

Trump hopes to strike a deal with North Korea to get the reclusive nation to relinquish its nuclear weapons, though he has described Tuesday’s summit as the start of a process meant for the two leaders to get to know each other.

Once in the room for the expanded meeting Tuesday, Trump told Kim that “we will solve it.”

“We will be successful, and I look forward to working on it with you,” Trump continued, sitting across a table from Kim. “It will be done.”
