NBA player Sterling Brown expected to file civil rights suit over police arrest

The attorney for Sterling Brown said he intended to file a civil rights lawsuit on the NBA player’s behalf following his arrest and tasing on Friday but has been delayed. 

In body camera footage released of the Milwaukee Bucks shooting guard’s encounter with police in late January, the rookie player can be seen confronted by police for a parking violation as he exits a store.

{mosads}The situation quickly escalated and Brown, 23, who appears to remain calm throughout the video, was subdued to the ground by an officers with a stun gun.

Sterling’s lawyer, Mark Thomsen, said he planned to file the lawsuit on Friday but the filing was postponed on Thursday night due to unspecified reasons, according to The New York Times.

Thomsen reportedly will hold a news conference at Milwaukee’s City Hall once the suit is filed.

“My experience in January with the Milwaukee Police Department was wrong and shouldn’t happen to anybody,” Brown said of the incident in a statement issued in May. 

“What should have been a simple parking ticket turned into an attempt at police intimidation, followed by the unlawful use of physical force, including being handcuffed and tased, and then unlawfully booked.”

Milwaukee Police Chief Alfonso Morales said he was “sorry this incident escalated to this level” following the release of the footage and later disclosed that “members acted inappropriately and those members were recently disciplined.”

Two sergeants and an officer were suspended over the incident, and eight officers had to undergo training.
