Trump quotes ex-Clinton adviser to slam Mueller’s ‘stormtrooper tactics’ in Russia probe

President Trump on Sunday found a new angle through which to go after special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into his campaign — former Clinton adviser Mark Penn.

Trump tweeted partial quotes from Penn’s appearance Sunday on Fox News’s “Sunday Morning Futures” to attack Mueller, including the ex-Clinton aide’s remark that the special counsel’s team appears to be using “stormtrooper tactics.”

“Why are there people from the Clinton Foundation on the Mueller Staff?,” Trump quoted in his tweet. “Why is there an Independent Counsel? To go after people and their families for unrelated offenses…Constitution was set up to prevent this…Stormtrooper tactics almost.”

Trump added “a disgrace,” seemingly expressing his agreement with Penn.

Penn, an opinion contributor to The Hill, was weighing in on the inspector general’s probe into Republicans’ claims of wrongdoing by the FBI and Justice Department in the Russia investigation.

“I still see that we don’t have the answer here — how this got started, why there was an independent counsel, why there are people from, who represented the Clinton Foundation on Mueller’s staff,” Penn said.

“All of these questions here remain unanswered and Mueller seems to have runaway power you know, using stormtrooper tactics almost,” he continued. “I don’t want to go overboard but to really go after people and their family in the ways that he has for unrelated offenses, is really all the kinds of things our Constitution was set up to prevent.”

Penn, the chief strategist for Hillary Clinton’s 2008 presidential campaign, recently said that Mueller’s probe was born out of “hysteria.” In a column for The Hill published last month, Penn argued that the investigation is flawed and should end.

Trump has long blasted Mueller’s probe as a “witch hunt” and claimed that it is biased against him.
