White House: ‘If the North Koreans want to meet, we’ll be there’
The White House said Thursday it is moving ahead with plans for a summit between President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, despite Pyongyang’s recent threats to scrap it.
“If the North Koreans want to meet, we’ll be there,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters.
Sanders added that “nothing has changed on our end” with regard to preparations, saying “the president is prepared and will be ready to meet.”
North Korea threw the June 12 summit into doubt on Wednesday when it threatened to pull out if the U.S. continues to demand its “unilateral” nuclear disarmament.
Trump himself acknowledged the summit might not take place, but said his administration has not heard directly from North Korea about its intentions.
Sanders said North Korea is not in the “driver’s seat” despite their efforts to gain leverage.
