Trump rips New York Times over report he sought to fire Mueller in December

President Trump on Thursday pushed back against a New York Times report that said he tried to fire special counsel Robert Mueller in December, calling the story “fake news from a biased newspaper.”

“If I wanted to fire Robert Mueller in December, as reported by the Failing New York Times, I would have fired him,” the president wrote on Twitter.

“Just more Fake News from a biased newspaper!”

{mosads}The Times said Trump’s push to fire Mueller followed news reports that said the special counsel subpoenaed Deutsche Bank for records on the president’s finances.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Tuesday that Trump believes he has the power to fire the special counsel, a move both Democrats and Republicans have cautioned the president not to make.

The Times previously reported that Trump called for Mueller’s firing last June, but reversed the decision after White House counsel Don McGahn threatened to quit.
