Army: Two died in helicopter crash in Kentucky

Two U.S. soldiers were killed in an Apache helicopter crash Friday night at their training base in Kentucky, CNN reports.

An accident around 9:50 p.m. near the training base of Fort Campbell, Ky., resulted in the deaths of two members of the 101st Airborne Division, according to a statement obtained by CNN. The Army is not releasing the names of the killed soldiers at this time.

“This is a day of sadness for Fort Campbell and the 101st Airborne,” Acting Fort Campbell Senior Commander Brig. Gen. Todd Royar said in a statement, according to multiple outlets. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families during this difficult time.”

The accident occurred during routine training, according to the statement, and is under investigation.

Seven U.S. service members have died in this week due to accidental aircraft crashes, according to news reports. Four Marines were killed earlier this week in a helicopter crash in California, and a day later an Air Force Thunderbird pilot died in a crash in Nevada.

In addition, the U.S. military announced this week it was halting air operations in Djibouti at the request of the country’s government after two accidental crashes in the country, where intense fighting against Islamic State in Iraq and Syria-aligned forces is occurring.

Last month, seven service members were killed when a U.S. helicopter in Iraq crashed due to an unknown reason that “does not appear to be a result of enemy activity,” according to a statement from the military.
