Oklahoma state lawmaker vows to vote against all education funding over teacher strike

An Oklahoma state representative is vowing to vote against any measures that fund public education in response to the state’s days-long teachers strike.

Rep. Kevin McDugle (R) made the commitment in a since-deleted Facebook Live video as the strike is poised to enter a third day, Tulsa World reported Tuesday.

“I’m not voting for another stinking measure when they’re acting the way they’re acting,” McDugle said.

He said that he had voted in favor of education funding measures last year, but that he didn’t believe the striking teachers were acting as good role models for their students.

“You’re losing support of people who supported you all year long,” McDugle said. “Now you’re going to come here and act like this after you got a raise?”

“Go ahead, be pissed at me if you want to,” he added.

Oklahoma teachers are set to enter the third day of the state-wide walkout over low wages and funding for schools. Oklahoma City Public Schools have already announced that schools would be closed Wednesday.

The state passed a law last month to raise teachers’ wages by $6,100 in an attempt to preempt the strike. However, teachers said the wage hike wasn’t enough and that they would walk out of classes.

Teachers are demanding a $10,000 raise over three years and $5,000 for support staff.
