Washington, D.C., public schools will be closed Wednesday due to forecasts of a winter storm hitting the area.

Students and teachers do not need to report to school but essential personnel are still expected to work, D.C. Public Schools announced on Twitter.

Although Tuesday marks the official first day of spring, Wednesday is forecasted to feature freezing temperatures through the day.

A winter storm warning will be in effect from 2 a.m. to 8 p.m. and up to 12 inches of snow are expected to accumulate throughout the day.

The snowfall will begin early Wednesday morning and is expected to stick to the roads, making travel more hazardous.

The D.C. area has not seen this much snow this late in the year in more than 50 years.
