Chuck Todd: ‘I’m obsessed’ with politicians saying ‘now is not the time’ to discuss gun violence

“Meet the Press” anchor Chuck Todd admonished lawmakers on Thursday for not doing more to prevent mass shootings, telling viewers that he is “obsessed” with how little has been done since the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre.

In a monologue on “Meet the Press Daily,” the NBC anchor targeted “politicians” who say that “now is not the time” to discuss gun control after mass shootings occur.

“Tonight I’m obsessed — and I’m probably not alone here — I’m obsessed that three of the deadliest mass shootings in modern history have occurred in the past five months,” Todd said.

“I’m obsessed that since the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, the horror that was supposed to change everything, changed nothing. I’m obsessed that there have been 239 school shootings since Sandy Hook. Two hundred and thirty-nine,” he continued.

“I’m obsessed with politicians who say now is not the time to talk about gun violence. I’m obsessed with people who say the way to prevent gun violence is more guns. And I’m obsessed with that now-famous Onion headline, the one they put up over and over again, ‘”No way to prevent this” says only nation where this regularly happens,'” Todd concluded, referring to a popular satirical news site.

Todd’s comments came after Wednesday’s shooting in Parkland, Fla., that killed 17 people and wounded many others when a former student allegedly attacked a high school during regular hours with a high-powered AR-15 rifle.

Police apprehended 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz after a brief manhunt. He reportedly confessed to the shooting Thursday.

The NBC journalist has previously used his show to criticize the Trump administration and Republicans over dysfunction in Washingtion, saying in a monologue earlier this month that it was becoming “difficult” to take the level of “crazy” emanating from the White House.
