Trump: ‘Democrats cave’ on shutdown

President Trump on Monday night touted a “big win for Republicans” in a tweet saying Democrats surrendered in the fight over the government shutdown.

“Now I want a big win for everyone, including Republicans, Democrats and DACA, but especially for our Great Military and Border Security,” Trump said in the tweet, sent out hours after he signed a stopgap funding bill to reopen the government.

{mosads}Democrats had insisted before the shutdown began Friday on including in any spending bill protections for those covered under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, but by Monday they signed onto a bill to fund the government until Feb. 8 without them.

“I am pleased that Democrats in Congress have come to their senses,” Trump said earlier in the day in a statement read to reporters by his chief spokeswoman.

Senate Democrats agreed to the deal after Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) promised to hold a debate on a bill to extend protections for DACA, which ends in March after Trump moved to scrap it last year.

The deal offers no assurances that such a bill will pass the Senate, or even be picked up by the House if it does.

Angry liberal groups largely agreed with the president’s assessment of Democrats.

“Today’s cave by Senate Democrats — led by weak-kneed, right-of-center Democrats — is why people don’t believe the Democratic Party stands for anything,” said Stephanie Taylor, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee. “These weak Democrats hurt the party brand for everyone and make it harder to elect Democrats everywhere in 2018.”
