Scarborough: I once asked Trump if he could read
MSNBC host Joe Scarborough continued his criticism of President Trump in an op-ed Thursday, detailing an interaction between himself, Trump and co-host Mika Brzezinski in which he asked Trump if he knew how to read.
“Mika Brzezinski and I had a tense meeting with Trump following what I considered to be a bumbling debate performance in September 2015. I asked the candidate a blunt question,” the “Morning Joe” host wrote in his op-ed for The Washington Post.
“Can you read?” Scarborough recalled asking Trump.
“Awkward silence,” he wrote.
{mosads}Scarborough said that he asked Trump again, “do you read?” and asked if someone wrote Trump a “one-page paper on a policy, could you read it?”
“Taken aback, Trump quietly responded that he could while holding up a Bible given to him by his mother,” Scarborough wrote. “He then joked that he read it all the time.”
Scarborough also blasted Republicans in the op-ed, asking what would “finally move” them to “deliver a non-negotiable ultimatum to this unstable president.”
“Will they dare place their country’s interests above their own political fears?” he wrote. “Or will they move to end this American tragedy only when there is nothing left to lose?
Scarborough’s op-ed comes after the release of multiple excerpts from Michael Wolff’s upcoming book “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House.”
Wolff writes in his book that some close to the president said that he “was no more than semi-literate.”
Trump “didn’t read” or “didn’t really even skim,” Wolff writes, creating issues when aides attempted to pitch policy to him.
Trump told The Washington Post in July 2016 that he doesn’t read much, but instead comes to the right decisions “with very little knowledge other than the knowledge I had.”
Scarborough has questioned Trump’s mental fitness for office multiple times in the past. In a December op-ed, the MSNBC host wrote that Trump was “unwell” and in November he claimed that close allies of Trump told him he has “early stages of dementia.”
