All flights have been temporarily suspended at New York’s John F. Kennedy airport as a so-called bomb cyclone storm pummels the east coast.

“Due to strong winds and whiteout conditions, flights at JFK have been temporarily suspended,” the airport tweeted.

{mosads}The storm, which has been marked by a dramatic and sudden drop in barometric pressure, is expected to bring high winds, blizzard conditions and snow all along the Middle Atlantic and Northeast regions.

“Minor to major coastal flooding and erosion will be possible, especially during high tides,” according to the National Weather Service. “Dangerous travel, scattered power outages, and bitter wind chill can be expected across the entire east coast.”

On Wednesday, areas of the U.S. that typically do not get large amounts of snow, such as Florida, Georgia and South Carolina, saw accumulations of up to 5.5 inches.

The storm has also affected business on Capitol Hill. The Senate canceled votes for the rest of the week after several lawmakers missed a Wednesday vote due to the weather.
