Dershowitz on Trump: ‘I am not his advocate, I’m an advocate for the rule of law’
Lawyer Alan Dershowitz said Friday that despite President Trump’s praise of him, “I am not his advocate, I’m an advocate for the rule of law.”
In an appearance on Fox News on Friday, Dershowitz was asked about Trump’s praise for his analysis of the ongoing investigation into ties between Russia and Trump’s presidential campaign.
“It’s always mixed,” Dershowitz said. “I just call it the way I see it when it comes to the law. If the president likes what I’m saying, fine, but tomorrow he may not like what I’m saying.”
{mosads}“I am not his advocate, I’m an advocate for the rule of law and an advocate for the Constitution,” he continued.
In an interview, Trump cited Dershowitz, who has argued that Trump’s firing of former FBI Director James Comey was not obstruction of justice because Trump has the right to fire the head of the bureau. Dershowitz has emphasized that collusion with a foreign government is not a crime.
“I watched Alan Dershowitz the other day, he said, ‘No. 1, there is no collusion, No. 2, collusion is not a crime, but even if it was a crime, there was no collusion,’ ” Trump said. “And he said that very strongly. He said there was no collusion. And he has studied this thing very closely. I’ve seen him a number of times.”
“There is no collusion, and even if there was, it’s not a crime,” Trump continued. “But there’s no collusion.”
Trump also blasted special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation in the interview, saying it “makes the country look very bad.”
“It puts the country in a very bad position,” Trump said. “So the sooner it’s worked out, the better it is for the country.”
Trump has previously promoted Dershowitz’s appearances on Fox News, calling one recent interview “a must watch.”
