Trump visits US troops at Walter Reed

President Trump is visiting wounded U.S. soldiers on Thursday at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center just outside Washington, D.C.

“We’ll be over there for a while, but we’re just going to wish them a merry Christmas,” Trump told reporters as he left the White House.

He called the soldiers “some of the bravest people anywhere in the world.”

The visit comes one day before Trump is scheduled to leave the nation’s capital to spend the holidays at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida.

White House chief of staff John Kelly was among the aides who accompanied Trump to the hospital for the private visit Thursday.

The retired Marine Corps general delivered a stirring defense of Trump in October after he came under criticism for his handling of a call to the widow of a fallen U.S. solider.

Past presidents have routinely visited U.S. military installations to offer holiday greetings to service members.

Former President Obama paid visits to Walter Reed in suburban Maryland and U.S. bases in Hawaii, where he spent Christmas and New Year’s with his family.
