Georgia Power says electricity at Atlanta airport will likely be restored by midnight

Georgia Power, a utility company headquartered in Atlanta, said on Sunday it expected to have electricity restored in the city’s international airport by midnight.

“Georgia Power continues to work closely with Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport personnel onsite to restore power to the Airport as quickly as possible. Assessment and repair efforts are well underway at this time and the company expects to have power restored to the Airport by midnight tonight,” the company said in a notice posted on Twitter.

A power outage earlier on Sunday left travelers stranded on the runway and in the terminals of the airport, which is one of the busiest in the world.

Anthony Foxx, the head of the Department of Transportation under former President Obama, tweeted that he had been stuck in one of the planes and that the outage represented a “total and abject failure” on the part of the airport.
