Harris: Trump should resign over sexual misconduct allegations

Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) on Thursday joined a growing group of Democratic senators calling for President Trump to step down amid resurfaced allegations of sexual misconduct against him.

Harris first told Politico’s David Siders that she believed Trump resigning due to sexual harassment allegations would be “in the best interest of the country.”

The California Democrat joins six other senators who have called for Trump to step down from his post: Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.).

The accusations against the president have garnered renewed attention in recent weeks as women across the country have come forward to accuse powerful men in various industries of sexual misconduct.

Three of the women who have accused Trump of harassment urged Congress in a press conference on Monday to investigate their stories.

Trump has denied the accusations and the White House has maintained that their official position on the matter is that all of the president’s accusers were lying.

The president commented on the issue on Tuesday, lashing out at Gillibrand after she called for his resignation. Trump’s tweet prompted swift backlash.
