Scarborough questions Trump’s mental fitness in Washington Post op-ed

MSNBC host Joe Scarborough continued his criticisms of President Trump in a new Washington Post op-ed, questioning his mental stability and fitness to serve as president.

The “Morning Joe” host has been a frequent critic of the president and often questions his mental health. In “Trump’s mental meltdown,” published Thursday night, Scarborough points to several recent incidents, such as Trump’s slurred speech during his remarks on Jerusalem this week.

“Many who move through his orbit believe Trump is not well,” Scarborough writes. “That is a verdict that was reached long ago by many of the president’s own staff. More than a few politicians and reporters across Washington have shared similar fears.”

Scarborough argued that his suspicions about Trump being “unwell” are not isolated, pointing to multiple recent observations by other lawmakers, officials and members of the media.

The MSNBC host noted that The New York Times’s Maggie Haberman recently described Trump’s behavior on CNN as “unmoored.”

“Haberman’s long history covering Trump makes her searing observations all the more troubling,” Scarborough writes.

Last month, Trump revived a conspiracy theory involving Scarborough, a former Florida congressman, calling for an investigation into the death of a former Scarborough staffer. In response, Scarborough said that the president is “not well,” and said that people close to Trump told him during the campaign that Trump had “early stages of dementia.”

Scarborough takes aim at GOP leaders who have not stood up to Trump given what Scarborough calls his “erratic” behavior, warning that America’s “safety and security” are at risk if lawmakers do not take action.

“Any Fortune 500 company would have fired a chief executive exhibiting similarly erratic behavior long ago,” he writes. “Unfortunately, the Washington leaders most strategically positioned to limit the damage seem to be frozen by fear.”

Scarborough adds that he and “Morning Joe” co-host Mika Brzezinski were expressing concerns about Trump’s fitness for office “two years ago,” when Trump first proposed a travel ban on certain Muslim-majority countries.

“Two years later, Trump has dragged America’s values and reputation to their lowest point in years,” Scarborough writes. “If Republicans don’t find their bearings soon, it may be America’s safety and security that are next to go.”
