Stephen Colbert to UK: Don’t believe Trump, we need help

Late-night CBS host Stephen Colbert mocked President Trump’s tweet at U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May on Friday, joking that the U.S. needs help and should rejoin the British empire.

Trump was involved this week in a Twitter spat with May, who condemned him through a spokesperson for retweeting anti-Muslim videos originally shared by a British right-wing group.

Colbert mocked Trump for his response to May, in which the president said that the U.S. was doing “just fine” and that May should focus on “Radical Islamic Terrorism” in her own country.

“Don’t believe him,” Colbert said. “England, we need your help. Take us back. We’ll be good. We’ll even drink tea.”

Trump retweeted several anti-Muslim videos on Wednesday, earning immediate backlash on both sides of the aisle as well as internationally.

Downing Street responded to Trump’s retweets by calling the president’s actions “wrong” in a statement.

“It’s wrong for the president to have done this,” read a statement from May’s spokesperson.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders defended Trump’s decision to share the videos, saying the veracity of the content wasn’t as important as the overall warning against Islamic extremism.

“I’m not talking about the nature of the video,” she told reporters at the White House. “I think you’re focusing on the wrong thing. The threat is real and that is what the president is talking about.”

The Netherlands’s Embassy responded by saying that “facts do matter.”

“@realDonaldTrump Facts do matter. The perpetrator of the violent act in this video was born and raised in the Netherlands. He received and completed his sentence under Dutch law,” the Netherlands’s Embassy tweeted.
