Sen. Ron Johnson (Wis.), the only Senate Republican so far to come out against the upper chamber’s tax-reform legislation, said Thursday that the bill should “be weighted toward economic growth.”
“The tax proposal should all be weighted toward economic growth,” Johnson told CNN’s “New Day.”
{mosads}Johnson said spurring the economy is critical for addressing the country’s growing debt, which stands at more than $20 trillion.
The senator’s comments come one day after he came out as the first Republican senator to oppose the tax legislation.
The House is expected to pass its own tax-reform legislation on Thursday, while the Senate bill may face a tougher road ahead. Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) has expressed concern about the upper chamber including the repeal of ObamaCare’s individual mandate in its proposal.
Johnson argues that both tax-reform plans in their current form do not provide enough aid to “pass-through entities,” which pay the individual income tax rate as opposed to the corporate rate.
“Well, what I want to see is the information to prove the kind of economic growth we’re going to get with all of our tax revisions,” the senator said.
