Pelosi: Trump doesn’t understand weight of his own words

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said President Trump doesn’t understand just how much weight his words carry amid growing concern over heightened tension between the U.S. and several countries, including North Korea.

“I’m not sure the President has understood that a president’s words weigh a ton and you can’t say things casually,” Pelosi told David Axelrod on the podcast “The Axe Files.”

{mosads}She said his hard-hitting rhetoric and fiery remarks go much further than “raising eyebrows,” as they make U.S. allies nervous about the possibility of a military conflict.

“There could be a serious military initiation of serious military action, which would be most unfortunate,” she added.

Pelosi’s comments come after Trump threatened last month to “totally destroy North Korea” and take military action if it continues to threaten the U.S. or its allies. Trump also made comments in August that seemed to suggest he was keeping military action against Venezuela on the table.

Pelosi is not the only lawmaker who has raised concerns over Trump’s rhetoric.

Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) last week in an interview warned that Trump could lead the country into World War III.

And Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) said last Monday that Trump’s rhetoric about North Korea must be taken “seriously,” saying Corker likely was trying to give a warning about the possibility of a real conflict.

“I thought it was quite interesting that a senior Republican leader in the Senate would say that about his president,” Pelosi added on the podcast, referring to Corker’s remarks.

Pelosi, a frequent critic of Trump and his administration, has fought against his agenda and repeatedly slammed the president for failing to get anything accomplished.
