Report: Burris to Meet With Durbin to Discuss Future
Sen. Roland Burris (D-Ill.) will meet with his Illinois colleague, Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D) today, the Chicago Sun-Times’s Lynn Sweet reports Tuesday morning.
Burris will tell Durbin he has no intention of resigning, Sweet wrote, but Burris may indicate that he will not seek reelection in 2010.
If Burris does resign, Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn (D) will appoint a caretaker to temporarily fill the seat until a special election could be held to fill the seat on a longer-term basis.
Quinn told Sweet that a Democrat would win any Senate election “in a landslide,” despite scandals involving former Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) and Burris in filling the vacancy left by President Obama in the Senate.
