Watts fuels speculation of OK gov. run

After surprising observers last week by saying he is considering a run for Oklahoma governor, former congressman J.C. Watts (R) fueled speculation on Monday by visiting the state Capitol.

The Associated Press reports that Watts met with the state Senate Pro Tem Glenn Coffee (R) and state Rep. T.W. Shannon (R), who used to work for Watts.

Afterward, Shannon told the AP that Watts brushed off questions about whether he will run for governor. “”I heard a lot of people ask him about [the governor’s race],” he said. “He just kind of chuckled. I didn’t hear a response one way or another.”

Watts told the Metropolitan Tulsa Chamber of Commerce last week that he is considering the race and that he’ll decide in 45 days.

The race for Oklahoma governor in 2010 is already drawing some serious contenders since Gov. Brad Henry (D) is term limited. Congresswoman Mary Fallin (R), who perviously served three terms as the state’s lieutenant governor, has jumped in the race and state Sen. Randy Brogdon (R) is considering it. Among Democrats, Lt. Gov. Jari Askins is running and state Attorney General Drew Edmondson is eyeing the race but has yet to announce.
