French leader: I’ll continue to press Trump on Paris climate accord

French President Emmanuel Macron said Saturday at the final meeting of the Group of 20 summit that he would continue to try to convince President Trump to change his mind about his decision to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris climate agreement.

“I never despair to convince, because I think it is a duty, given my position, and it is a trait of my character,” Macron said when asked if he would try to convince Trump to reverse his decision to withdraw from the agreement, according to Reuters.

Every country except the U.S. at that the G-20 summit in Hamburg, Germany, has agreed to the terms of the 2015 Paris climate agreement negotiated by the Obama administration.

Macron said Saturday that he would host a summit in France on Dec. 12 to advance the climate deal. Trump announced last month that he would withdraw the U.S. from the accord.

“On Dec. 12, two years after the Paris (climate) agreement, I will therefore convene a summit to take further action on climate, notably on the financial front,” the French leader told reporters.

The summit would focus on advancing private and public financing for the climate-related projects agreed to in the accords.

Trump met one-on-one with Macron at the summit in Germany and is slated to go to France on July 14 for the Bastille Day military parade.
