Five things protesters want from the Trump administration

Protesters took to the streets of Washington, D.C. and cities around the United States on Saturday, many to demonstrate against the Trump administration and others to thank the president.

The two events, the “March for Truth” and “Pittsburgh not Paris,” come two days after President Trump announced his decision to pull out of the Paris climate agreement, a move met with criticism on both sides of the aisle.

The “March for Truth” took place in D.C. and had sister marches across the country, garnering hundreds of demonstrators. “Pittsburg not Paris” was a more concentrated event held solely outside the White House.

{mosads}While thousands gathered across the nation, the demands and goals of demonstrators differed from group to group and even within the same protests.

Here are five things protesters called for as they rallied throughout the nation this weekend:

Independent Russia investigation

One of the March for Truth’s four objectives called for an independent commission to investigate Russia’s attempts to meddle in the United States presidential election.

Several Democratic lawmakers have called for an independent commission for the Russia probe, which protesters echoed on Saturday.

The March also called for transparency in the probe.

Impeachment

Demonstrators also called for Trump’s impeachment, a word Democratic lawmakers mentioned after Trump’s decision last month to fire FBI Director James Comey, who had been leading the bureau’s Russia investigation. 

Another objective listed by the March for Truth calls for potential crimes found in the Russia probe to be prosecuted.

In New York, demonstrators carried signs calling for Trump’s impeachment.

To stay in Paris agreement

Protesters carried signs supporting the Paris accord, a deal reached under the Obama administration by nearly 200 countries that Trump has criticized as unfair to the United States.

Critics of the president’s decision last week to pull out the agreement, which aims to combat climate change, argue it is dangerous for the environment and future generations.

Trump’s tax returns 

The third objective of the March for Truth asks Congress to push Trump to release his tax returns.

The president broke with decades of practice during the campaign by not disclosing his returns, and Democrats have continued to call on Trump to do so since the inauguration. 

Trump’s tax returns were the focus of a separate tax day march that took place in April. However, marchers on Saturday continued the calls for Trump to release his returns with signs and chants.

Protesters in favor of Trump

While marches across the country aimed to place pressure on the Trump administration over its various policies, the “Pittsburgh not Paris” rally praised the president for his decision to pull the United States out of the Paris climate deal.

The rally, dubbed “Pittsburgh not Paris,” is a reference to the president’s line on Thursday in his announcement to leave the accord, when Trump said “he was elected to represent the citizens of Pittsburgh, not Paris.”

The Trump campaign promoted the event, which was organized by the Republican Party of Virginia and the Fairfax County Republican Committee.
