VIDEO: Obama pledges to travel to Detroit to help workers
President Obama pledged to visit Detroit and Michigan in coming months to meet with auto workers about the restructuring of General Motors and Chrysler.
In interviews with local television affiliates Monday afternoon, Obama said there was “no doubt” he would visit the state in coming months.
“There’s no doubt that you’re going to see me in Michigan, and I’m looking forward to talking to those same workers I’ve worked with and fought for for a long time,” Obama told the Fox affiliate in Detroit “And I want to make sure they know they have a president who’s thinking about them every single day.”
“I think you can expect that I will once again travel to Detroit and Michigan over the next several months, because I think it’s important to send a signal to them that I have faith in auto workers,” Obama also told the ABC affiliate.
In the interviews, Obama also voiced praise for the ousted GM chief Rick Wagoner, and said that the wants to “get the government out of the business of providing bailouts.”
